We are in the loading shed behind Santa's workshop. Some dejected and tired-looking reindeer, including SMASHER and GROMMET, are loafing about. These are clearly not the type of reindeer we expect to see pulling Santa's sleigh now, but back in their heydays they just might have been.

    SMASHER
    (Singing)
I SUPPOSE IT'S CHRISTMAS AGAIN
I SUPPOSE THERE'LL BE LAUGHTER AND MERRIMENT
I SUPPOSE WE'LL STAY HERE
WHILE OUR BETTER-KNOWN COUNTERPARTS
CAVORT HIGH OVER THE SNOWS

    GROMMET
    (Singing)
I SUPPOSE IT'S CHRISTMAS AGAIN
I SUPPOSE THAT THE TOYS WILL BE FABULOUS
I SUPPOSE WE WILL WATCH
WHILE THOSE GOOD-LOOKING ANTLERED-ONES
GET ALL THE GLORY...

    SMASHER
                 ...AND DOES
NOBODY KNOWS
THAT THE NOSE
ON THE FAMOUS ONE
IS FAKE
AND IT RUNS
ON BATTERIES

    GROMMET
NOBODY CARES
THAT THE HAIRS
ON THOSE PERFECT TAILS
ARE HELD IN THEIR PLACES
WITH HAIRSPRAY...

    SMASHER
              ...AND ANTIFREEZE

(They share a dry laugh)

    SMASHER and GROMMET
I SUPPOSE IT'S CHRISTMAS AGAIN
I SUPPOSE WE WILL SMILE FOR THE PHOTOGRAPHS

(They pantomime posing for the obligatory annual staff
photo with exaggeratedly phony smiles)

I SUPPOSE THE PERFECTION
THAT SANTA DEMANDS
WILL LOOK EASY TO EVERYONE EVERYWHERE
BUT BACK HERE WE ALL KNOW
THAT IF CHRISTMAS SEEMS MAGICAL
IT'S BECAUSE WE STEPPED UP
AND SUPPOSED IT WAS
CHRISTMAS AGAIN
