If We Only Had a Cat
Song, Musical Theater (2014), from Live to Draw
This Recording

(Wanda Ga'g's most famous children's book, MILLIONS OF CATS, was published in 1928. This song dramatizes the opening of the story.)

    NARRATOR
Once upon a time there was a very old man
and a very old woman. They lived in a nice
clean house which had flowers all around it,
except where the door was. But they couldn't
be happy because they were so very lonely.

"If we only had a cat!" sighed the very old woman.

    OLD WOMAN
    (Singing)
IF WE ONLY HAD A CAT,
WE'D BE HAPPY.
SOMETHING FURRY,
WARM AND PURRY,
FOR A LAP.
WE'D BE HAPPY.

EARS AND WHISKERS ROUND THE HOUSE,
PAWS AND CLAWS TO CATCH A MOUSE

WE'D BE HAPPY
AND NOT LONELY
IF WE ONLY
HAD A CAT.

    OLD MAN
    (Speaking)
A cat?

    OLD WOMAN
    (Speaking)
Yes, a sweet little fluffy cat.
    (Singing)
IF WE ONLY HAD A CAT
SWEET AND FLUFFY
JUST ONE PRETTY
LITTLE KITTY
IS ENOUGH
SWEET AND FLUFFY

    OLD MAN
(Now in the spirit of the idea, singing)
SWISHY TAIL TO TWIST AND JUMP
FEED IT MILK UNTIL IT'S PLUMP

    OLD WOMAN
WE'D BE HAPPY
AND NOT LONELY

    OLD MAN
I WOULD SURELY WELCOME THAT

    OLD WOMAN and OLD MAN
WE'D BE HAPPY
AND NOT LONELY
IF WE ONLY
HAD A CAT.
